“Freedom of Movement” Lecture on the Žabica Bus Terminal

Rijeka City Library

06. May 2025

On May 6, 2025,  the Rijeka City Library hosted the public lecture “Freedom of Movement”, which gathered a large audience of citizens, architects, and urban planners. The lecture was delivered by Ivana Šajn, project leader and long-time member of the 3LHD studio.

The focus of the lecture was the Žabica Bus Terminal, one of the most significant infrastructural projects in Rijeka’s recent urban history. Ivana Šajn presented the development of the project, which dates back to 2006 when 3LHD won the public architectural competition. After nearly two decades of planning and preparation, the construction marks a pivotal moment in redefining the city center.

Situated between the railway station and the maritime terminal, the new facility is designed not only as a transportation hub, but as a strategic urban point that brings a new logic of connection and spatial openness towards the waterfront. The project aims to ease traffic congestion, improve mobility, and create new public spaces for citizens.

The audience learned about the challenges of such a long-term undertaking, the role of interdisciplinary collaboration, and the project’s potential to shape the future of Rijeka’s coastline. The lecture underscored architecture’s potential to drive social change, with 3LHD’s longstanding expertise in shaping contemporary public space being both recognized and appreciated.
